The fragrant flowers of June will be on offer for this class, filling the classroom with their scent. We will learn about and design with locally grown roses, peonies, mock orange and other super stars of early summer.

The intoxicating smell of summer flowers invites us to consider the role scent plays in botanical design and the natural world. We’ve all buried our nose in a bloom and sighed with delight (haven’t we?). It’s undeniable that scent is a fundamental element of our love of flowers. In this class we’ll discuss that topic while being bowled over by the magic of June blooms. How can we transform an interior space with the scents of nature? How can we choose blooms for their scents and maximize their power? Which varieties deliver the most scent, and how are they transformed when grouped together in a vase?

Hannah Morgan will demonstrate the fundamentals of the Fortunate Orchard design style and discuss sustainability, sourcing and caring for cut flowers and foliage. After Hannah’s demo students will dive in, creating their own floral centerpiece in an 8” footed bowl. The finished arrangement will be perfect for a dining table or mantel, and you will have the knowledge to design with flowers throughout the seasons.

Class will be held indoors at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, and space is limited to 12 students. Delicious snacks will be served, to fuel the body as we dig deep into creativity, finding inspiration in nature. Please note: Pre-registration is required; classes are non-refundable but are transferable.
